Lake View

When Clark Street was an Indian path known as the Green Bay Trail and scattered bands of Miami, Ottawa and Winnebago tribes camped along the north branch of the Chicago River, the first settler, Conrad Sulzer, came to live in what is now Lake View East. Sulzer, who arrived in 1837, later became the first accessor at the first election of the old Lake View Township in 1857. Today, the Conrad Sulzer Regional Library is named in his honor. Legend has it that the name Lake View was derived from the "Hotel Lake View," built on the lakeshore in 1853. It was said that Walter L. Newberry, a friend of the hotel's owners, was delighted with the unbroken view of the lake and proposed the name. By 1887 the town of Lake View was incorporated into the city and in 1889 it was annexed to Chicago's real estate boom.

Formerly a truck farming region known as the "celery capitol of the world," Lake View today is a culturally diverse neighborhood with a European-like flare. The richness of cuisine, from a typical Chicago-style hot dog to authentic Thai restaurants, the wonderful assortment of theaters, such as the famous Briar Street theater and other small theater companies, the unique shops and large retailers, as well as the many open lakefront parks, provide ample activities for both visitors and residents alike. Central Lake View is also the home of Wrigley Field, a revered Mecca in the sport of professional baseball.

The Lake View business community offers unique products and services, and has developed a strong, positive relationship with area residents. It is a thriving, active community of small business owners, many of whom are also residents of the neighborhood. The greater metropolitan Chicago area is readily accessible from Lake View by car, bus, train and the famous El. Real estate investors appreciate the stability and growth potential in the local housing market. Home values continue to rise due in part to the many attractive, affordable, safe and friendly neighborhoods.

Great job opportunities, some of the best schools in the nation and a vibrant, bustling atmosphere combine to make Lake View a desirable residential community.
